Tropical moisture ceases to cause severe floods in South East Australia
Friday, March 26, 2021
On Tuesday, higher than average amounts of precipitation have ceased in New South Wales (NSW), south of Queensland, and north-east of South Australia. Over the course of the prior five days, these heavy rains caused floods and hazards to farms and dwellings, with up to a month quantity of rainfall falling within 48 hours on Monday and Tuesday in some areas, notably 150mm of rain at the Great Dividing Range, Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) reported.
On Tuesday, BoM said the situation reportedly started to ease, with rains moving towards the east, but emphasised the water levels were continuing to rise in some areas and many flood alerts remained active. Meteorologists said the eastern areas may clear from floodwater quickly, the other regions to the west of the Great Dividing Range would be affected for much longer, potentially weeks or months before the water levels come back to normal. Thick fog was likely to occur at approximately this coming weekend as air temperatures drop below dew point at night and mist may develop, meteorologists warned, as News.com.au reported.
In Taree, NSW, ABC News reported multiple cows rescues in rivers and in the surf, and an instance of a dwelling being reportedly swept from premises on a wedding day of its owners. ABC News reported a farmer losing his animals and his house at Mid-North Coast. Of residential areas, Hawkesbury continued to experience raising levels of flood as of Monday. Ian Wright, a researcher from Western Sydney University, commented saying the floods in Hawkesbury are dangerous due to the terrain and rigorous water supply from adjacent rivers to the area, citing a related publication about it by the State Emergency Service.
On Monday, NSW Police has rescued a 80-year old woman trapped in a car at River Road, Wyong, Central Coast, with the car subsequently falling into the river shortly after the rescue was completed.
Local authorities warned people to stay away from flooded areas. Bureau of Meteorology issued Road Weather Alert for Sydney for all suburbs on Monday. Government agencies, including Disaster recovery officer Simon Oliver, from the Department of Primary Industries, said the government would offer support to people affected by the flood. Oliver said, “While it’s still early days, we are planning to provide support including emergency fodder as well as support for those who need to move or dispose of stock [animals].”
BoM reported the weather may clear on Wednesday as a warmer, drier mass of air was expected to increase, with a coastal low entering Bass Strait on Wednesday.
Since March 16, Australian BoM has issued severe weather, marine wind, hazardous surf, and numerous minor to major flood warnings for the affected areas. La Niña was nearing its end, with the effects persisting in late March and early April, Bureau of Meteorology reported last week.

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich
Saturday, August 2, 2008
A 54-year-old German farmer who lost both arms in a farming accident six years ago has become the first patient to receive a complete double arm transplant. The patient, whose name has not been released, underwent the operation at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), last week; he is said to be recovering well.
The operation lasted 15 hours and was performed by a team of 40 specialists in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology, under the direction of the head of the Plastics and Hand Surgery department, Prof. Hans-Günther Machens, Dr. Christoph Höhnke (Head of Transplants, Senior Physician; Plastics and Hand Surgery) and Prof. Edgar Biemer, the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Clinic.
In a press statement released by the clinic, it was revealed that the patient had been thoroughly physically checked and had psychological counselling prior to the surgery to ensure he was mentally stable enough to cope with the procedure. Since completion of the surgery, the patient has been on immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection of the new limbs.
Following the surgery, the press release from the clinic’s press manager, Dr. Tanja Schmidhofer, included the following statement:
| The flow of blood was [re-]started in intervals of 20 minutes because the anaesthetists had to make sure that the patient would not suffer from the blood flowing back from the transplanted parts. No significant swelling was seen, nor indeed any ischemia (lack of blood flow to the tissues). This is a testament to the surgeons who established a fully functioning blood flow…the main nerves, the Musculocutaneus, Radial and Ulnar nerves were all attached and sewn together, and finally an external fixator was applied, with pins in the lower and upper arms, avoiding the risk of pressure points and sores. The operation was successfully completed after 15 hours. |
Without the immuno-suppressant drugs given to the patient, the risk of there being a Graft-versus-Host Reaction or GvHR, would have been significant due to the upper arm containing a large amount of bone marrow, consisting of ICC’s or Immuno-Competent Cells, which would have triggered a near total rejection of the new limbs. A GvHR is a condition which results in the cells from the transplant attacking the immune system of the body.
Indications from the clinic suggest that the double attachment went well, although it could be up to 2 full years before the patient is able to move the arms.
The donor arms came from an unnamed teenager, who is believed to have died in a car accident.
United States: One person dead after boat to offshore casino burns off Florida coast
Wednesday, January 17, 2018
On Sunday, a boat ferrying people to a floating casino in the Gulf of Mexico caught fire and burned near New Port Richey, Florida, US. All 50 passengers aboard abandoned ship and jumped into the sea, but one died in hospital that evening.
Beth Fifer, assistant chief executive of the Tropical Breeze Casino Cruise, said that the fire started at about 3:30 PM, local time, as the boat was outbound to the casino. According to Gerard DeCanio, the police chief of Port Richey, the captain saw smoke coming from the engine and turned back, then grounded the boat in shallow water.
The boat was rapidly engulfed in flames. Those aboard had to jump about ten feet into waist-high water and swim or wade ashore to safety. The police said that about fifteen were treated at local hospitals, including for possible hypothermia from exposure to the cold sea water. The one fatality, a 42-year-old woman, went to the emergency room at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point hours later and died at 10:42 p.m., according to Kurt Conover, a spokesman for the medical center and Kevin Doll, a spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Passenger Qaadia Culbreath told WFLA-TV that he couldn’t swim and didn’t see any life jackets, so he found himself “dangling off the metal hanger in the front of the boat because I didn’t want to let go”. Andrew Fossa, deputy fire chief of Pasco County, described locals who assisted the passengers as they scrambled to shore as “phenomenal”.
According to police chief DeCanio, the boat captain had reported engine trouble on earlier trips. Fifer said, “It would’ve never left the dock if we knew something was wrong with it.” The Coast Guard has announced that they will review maintenance records. The casino operates offshore, requiring a boat to ferry gamblers to and fro, because casino gambling is not legal in the state of Florida.
BBC to cut Electric Proms for financial reasons

The BBC have announced they are to axe annual music festival Electric Proms from their schedule for financial reasons. The festival first took place in October 2006. The 2011 event will not go ahead, with last year’s festival being the last.
Bob Shennan, controller of BBC Radio 2, said he was “disappointed” with the decision to cancel the festival. He said “In the current climate, we are faced with making difficult decisions, including how best to deliver high-quality live music programming throughout the year in light of continuing efficiency savings. I feel that Radio 2 can achieve the same impact of the Electric Proms in an alternative, more cost-effective way. I’m disappointed that the lifetime of Electric Proms has come to an end, but very proud of its fantastically rewarding run of creating new moments in music for the past five years.”
During the festival’s five year run it has featured performances from stars such as Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Shirley Bassey.
The decision to axe the festival comes at a time when the BBC are planning a 20% savings cut. Last week BBC director general Mark Thompson announced 650 job losses after dropping five languages from the BBC World Service.

Buying a new home is never an easy process. It can be frustrating and stressful and leave you feeling hopeless and scared. Make sure you put your fears to rest by hiring a Home Inspector in Naperville to help you determine whether you are buying a quality property or a money Pitt that will cost a lot of money to repair. While you can see some items with your own eyes, a home inspector will take an in depth look at all of the systems and items around the home that are likely to fail. While they will thoroughly investigate all areas, the following are the top three things a home inspector can check. Put the knowledge of a professional to work for you.
HVAC System : A furnace is the heart of the heating and cooling system of any home. It is what keeps the home comfortable all year long and helps increase the quality of the air that you breathe. If this breaks, it can cost thousands to repair or replace. A Home Inspector in Naperville will be able to look for potential problems and help determine if the furnace is in good condition before you buy a home.
Electrical System : A faulty electrical system can be expensive to repair and lead to complete destruction of your home if not addressed in a timely manner. Make sure you let them look for any existing damage and make sure that all outlets and lights work as they are supposed to. It can help save you money in the future and prevent disaster from striking your new home.
Crawl Space and Attic : A lot of problems can be present in both the attic and crawl space of any home. An inspector will access both areas and look for water and structural damage that could cause the home to be unsafe. Make sure there isn’t water gathering under your future home, or that there isn’t rotten wood in the rafters. Both of these can be expensive to repair and lead to major problems in the future. If you are ready to buy a home, hire a home inspector to guide you through the process. In the Napervill area, trust the professionals of Lawson’s Home Inspections. They have been conducting home inspections for over 20 years, and they can put their years of experience to work for you. G20 Summit plans to inject US$5tn into economy before 2011
Friday, April 3, 2009
The G20 Summit held in London, England concluded Thursday with an injection into the economy of US$5 trillion by the end of 2010.
Global trade would be supported by $250 billion (169.5 billion pounds). “We are going to act decisively to kickstart international trade. We will ensure availability of at least $250 billion over the next two years,” said Gordon Brown Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The International Monetary Fund IMF will have access to $750bn in resources of which $250bn will support special drawing rights.
Developing countries received $100bn which will be dispensed via Multilateral development banks. Towards this end, the IMF will sell off gold reserves.
China will support the IMF fund by $40bn, the European Union by $100bn, and Japan by $100bn.
There will be increased regulation on banking and credit ratings agencies. There was a commitment to clamp down on hedge funds, tax havens and toxic assets. To restore consumer confidence in the financial sector, a new Financial Stability Board will be initiated internationally. There would be new policies implemented to control pay and bonuses paid to the heads of banks and corporations.
The G20 leaders were adverse to protectionism and rallied to support international trade and investment.
The Leaders’ statement said, “We reaffirm the commitment made in Washington: to refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new export restrictions, or implementing World Trade Organization (WTO) inconsistent measures to stimulate exports.”
Eoin O’Malley, senior adviser on international trade at BusinessEurope, said “The measure also needs to be part of wider package to avoid protectionism and conclude the Doha round which will stimulate trade growth. The key point now is to move forward with Doha. The key now is implementation. G20 governments must act quickly to provide this finance to companies that need it urgently.”
Iran demands that IAEA end surveillance of its nuclear program
Tuesday, February 7, 2006
Shortly after ending its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the government of Iran has now ordered the IAEA to discontinue some of its surveillance of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Tehran has also asked the agency to remove any and all signage from their nuclear sites by the end of next week.
This is in response to the Saturday resolution by the IAEA to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council, which was made without waiting for the director of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, chairman of the IAEA, to finish preparing a report on Iran’s civilian (and allegedly military) nuclear programs for the regular IAEA meeting scheduled for March 6. ElBaradei had given Iran until March to answer IAEA questions. By a vote of 27 to three (with five abstentions), and without the information in ElBaradei’s report planned for March 2006, the IAEA recommended that the matter of the Iranian nuclear program be brought before the Security Council.
The recommendation claims that there are serious concerns about Iranian nuclear aims, and the agency does not have confidence that the program is intended solely for civilian or other non-military use. Although the meeting was taken without waiting for ElBaradei’s March report, the recommendation requests ElBaradei to make his report anyway, including a list of “steps Iran needs to take to dispel suspicions about its nuclear ambitions” by March 6.
The IAEA’s resolution calls for Iran to reinstate a freeze on its nuclear programs, consider ending construction of a plutonium-producing heavy water reactor, and to continue allowing the IAEA’s purposes and actions in Iran. However, the council will not implement any further action until ElBaradei makes his full report on March 6.
ElBaradei also reported to the IAEA Monday that Iran would also demand a reduction in the amount of facilities inspections from the agency, and that they would discontinue their agreement to the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if the agency reported Iran to the Security Council. This protocol entitles the IAEA to hold unannounced inspections of facilities, increased surveillance capability, and placing IAEA seals on nuclear equipment.
Other diplomatic ventures are being planned. On February 16, Iranian officials will meet with the Russian government in Moscow to discuss the possibility of Russia enriching uranium for export to Iran in exchange for a halting of its nuclear enrichment program. And Wang Guangya, China’s ambassador to the UN, said Monday that “Even with the adoption of this IAEA resolution, it is the belief of most of the members there that a diplomatic solution is the way out within the framework of the IAEA.”
Compare A Schwinn Airdyne Bike To A Recumbent

There are advantages to riding a simple heavyweight dual action Schwinn Airdyne bike. But after the bike has kept the same design for about thirty years, it can stand some comparison to popular recumbent bikes. Here are 5 ways to compare the two types of bikes before you choose one over the other.
1. Quiet or noise?
Air dyne bikes make a great deal of noise. It’s because the resistance that you oppose as you pedal comes form turning a big fan blade. All that blade noise keeps up quite a racket. In contrast most all recumbent drives use a magnet system to generate resistance. That approach is all but silent. That means with a recumbent one can listen to music, watch movies or anything else that requires quiet. With an Airdyne few noises will top the fan noise.
2. With or without electronic power?
One way to fight boredom that comes with pedaling is available with computer power. Programmable workout routines are possible because of the electronic drives on virtually all recumbent bikes. Vary the programs and you get workouts that vary just as you would riding on the road. That means you can regularly ride different virtual routes and keep workouts fun and interesting. The Air-dyne lacks computer power since it isn’t possible to control that big resistance fan except by manually changing the way you pedal.
3. How do you handle breezes?
Part of the comfort of recumbent bikes is the quiet and calm. Exercise in a calm, quiet environment. In contrast, the faster you pedal a dual action bike, the more frantic the wind and noise become. That’s a welcome feel in warm weather, a balmy breeze, but it could be somewhat irritating as well.
4. Isn’t it nice to get something new?
Recumbent bikes generally receive high marks for reliability. However, electronics can fail and the systems are very expensive to repair if that happens. In contrast a Schwinn Airdyne is just abut as bullet-proof as anything that moves. There really are few pieces prone to fail and thus the thing should last for as long as you wan to pedal it, maybe longer. That means you can’t use any really good excuses to get another one.
5. Emphasis on legs?
Recumbent bikes mostly work legs. That means the larger muscles get most of the work. That’s a great way to fitness, to work mostly the larger muscles. Also in most cases, most people would agree that’s where their “problem” areas are. With the Schwinn, you can just work the lower parts, but it’s less convenient. To keep your balance easily, the arms just about have to go along for the ride at least.
A Schwinn Airdyne Bike comes as rugged, heavyweight machine that excels in overall body workouts. It’s a simple machine built to last and likely will be the last exercise machine you really need. However, it lags badly the more modern recumbent bikes when it comes to features and comfort. The best bike for you may depend on several factors.
