Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai discharged from hospital

Friday, January 4, 2013

The Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban for campaigning for education for girls, was discharged yesterday from the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham, England after success in the first stage of her medical treatment.

In October, Yousafzai was shot by Taliban forces on a school bus in Mingora, Swat District, Pakistan. She was given emergency treatment in Pakistan and then flown to Britain for treatment at a specialist unit which deals with injured soldiers.

Dave Rosser, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust medical director, gave a statement about Yousafzai’s release from hospital: “Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery. Following discussions with Malala and her medical team, we decided that she would benefit from being at home with her parents and two brothers. She will return to the hospital as an outpatient and our therapies team will continue to work with her at home to supervise her onward care.”

She is due to return to hospital in a few weeks for cranial reconstructive surgery.

The Growing Demand for Laser Hair Removal at Home

Of all the cosmetic treatments available in the USA today, the most desired among women under 35 is hair removal laser treatment. Even among the over-35’s, Laser hair removalis only overtaken by Botox therapy.Given this vast popularity and interest in the use of hair removal laser treatment, it is not surprising that a number of companies have attempted to capitalize on this market-place with appliances for home laser hair removal.Hair Laser Removal DIY Machine – The Unimed Laser Hair Removal LB100s applianceThe Unimed Laser Hair Removal LB100s appliance is one such home-use tool, in addition to the other commonly-known model, the LB500s.The LB100s is a hair laser removal DIY appliance, with a control box and a wand which you point at your skin in the area you wish to treat. It uses a Class C diode and the laser beam wavelength is 808nm (nanometers). Is it Too Good to be True?It is reported that the distributors of the Unimed Laser Hair Removal LB100s appliance have made a number of claims such as:-Virtually pain-free, fast method of removal of hair -Permanent removal of hair -Shrinkage of pores after treatment gives you smoother skin -80% effectiveBuyer Beware! The Unimed Laser Hair Removal LB100s appliance is NOT licensed by the FDA for permanent home laser hair removal. As such, it is not permitted for companies to claim that this appliance can produce permanent results.Claims you may see of 80% effectiveness are also very unlikely to be true; studies have shown that this level of effectiveness after treatment can occur, but these do not relate to this specific home device. So – please go into any purchase with healthy skepticism!Consider the New TriaThe “Tria”, a just-launched competitor to the Unimed home laser devices, is the first appliance to receive FDA certification to be sold over the counter as a hair laser removal DIY appliance.Backed by many years of scientific studies, the Tria is created by a reputable company that seems to be abstaining from unrealistic claims.Extensive scientific studies show that patients can expect a reduction of approximately a third in hair regrowth a year after treatment, as opposed to around 80% for patients treated with the professional equipment used by doctors. The Tria is likely to be a great way for patients to provide themselves with top-up treatment in the privacy of their home to deal with hair regrowth between professional sessions; this is the reason that doctors are excited about Tria – not because they think it is likely to supplant professional laser treatment. Please Think Carefully before You Buy!If you’re the sort of person who likes trying out new things (and can afford to!) – then a hair laser removal DIY appliance could be well placed on your shopping list! But do take care and think about the following before investing in something that has the potential to disappoint!-Consider whether you can afford to have a professional sequence of therapy, using a home laser device for top-up DIY treatment in between. -Remember that the FDA has not approved the Unimed Laser Hair Removal LB100s as suitable for home hair removal. Consider the more expensive Tria if you can. -If possible, get a personal recommendation. At the minimum, search for genuine product reviews on the internet. -Don’t play with your health – always adhere to all safety precautions with care. Lasers can damage your eyesight and cause burns.Ingrid Preubelaser hair removal

Police track kidney doctor to Brampton, Canada

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

The hunt for alleged kidney harvester, Dr. Amit Kumar, has led investigators to Brampton, a city in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) of Ontario, Canada.

Indian investigators allege that Kumar is the kingpin of a ring that removed kidneys of poor laborers in India for transplantation to the highest bidding patients, usually foreigners. After a request by Indian police via an Interpol “red notice”, Canadian police located a house in Brampton owned by Kumar, who has been dubbed “Dr. Horror” by the Indian press.

The house is occupied by a woman, presumed to be his wife, and two young children. Kumar purchased the 5,600 sq ft (~510 m²) home on February 2, 2007 for C$610,000. Reportedly, additional upgrades were performed at the home, including an in-ground pool, at a cost of C$100,000. The family drives an expensive SUV. The children, two boys aged 4 and 5, are said to be enrolled at private schools.

Dr. Kumar, a nephrologist, born Santosh Rameshwar Raut, was known to his neighbors. He told them that he was a cardiovascular surgeon in India, but that he wanted to buy a hotel in Canada and, after one last trip to India to tie up loose ends, permanently relocate to Canada.

“We are completely shocked,” a neighbor told the Toronto Star. “We used to joke at parties that he must be loaded to get such a beautiful wife, but nothing prepared us for this.” Another neighbor told the paper, “It’s very unusual for someone to come here from India and buy a big house like this and a Lexus. Doctors in India just don’t make that kind of money.”

Meanwhile, investigators are no closer to Amit Kumar, than they were a few days ago. It is widely believed that he is trying to flee India for Canada via Nepal, a country for which he is alleged to have a passport.

Police in Mumbai, however, believe he is still in India. “He is very much in India,” commissioner Rakesh Maria said on Tuesday. “We suspect he will never leave.”

“He will stay in India — it won’t be easy to conduct his illegal activities anywhere else,” he said. “In a country like Canada, it would almost be impossible to find [kidney] donors in large numbers.”

They think they can buy the kidney for peanuts. That’s why the likes of [Amit Kumar] can prosper.

However, after a request by the Haryana state government, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will soon take lead in the investigation.

“We haven’t yet received a final word to start investigations,” CBI Director Vijay Shankar said. “We will begin working on the case as per legal process.” Thus far, police in Gurgoan, Moradabad, Mumbai and Rajasthan have been investigating the case separately.

The case has called attention to medical tourism, the practice of traveling abroad for health care at more affordable rates. Kumar is alleged to have charged US$50,000 for a kidney transplant. The donors are said to have been paid the equivalent of US$1,200. Even so, the donors, according to widespread reports and testimonials, may not have realized what they were getting into when they went with a stranger for a well-paying job.

The Toronto Star interviewed a medical tourism travel agent, who operates openly. Aruna Thurairajan, who runs Overseas Medical Services in Calgary, Alberta, says that she frequently gets calls from patients in need of a kidney. Thurairajan refuses to give referrals for transplants because it “gives medical tourism a bad rap.”

“Money is a big factor for people to decide where to go. Often they want to bargain how much to pay the vendor [organ donor]. Some of them can be quite selfish and mean. They think they can buy the kidney for peanuts. That’s why the likes of [Amit Kumar] can prosper. So the patient should also be blamed along with him, because the patient bargains down the price,” said Thurairajan.

But the victims of this illegal trade are not exclusively the poor day laborers but sometimes the clients themselves, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The investigation cited a driver for a close associate of Amit Kumar and claims that at least three foreigners died on Dr. Kumar’s operating table. He was able to name three Turkish nationals who all died in India between 2003 and 2005, officially from cardiac arrest. The driver, Harpal, says that the bodies were brought to a hospital in Ballabgarh, Faridabad, where the local authorities colluded with the doctors to list the cause of death as heart failure.

Multifaith council commends Malaysian politician’s comments on conversion to Islam

Saturday, May 3, 2008

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism issued a statement Friday praising comments made Wednesday by Malaysian politician Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan on conversion to Islam. Malaysian Consultative Council president Datuk A. Vaithilingam said that Ong’s views are shared by Malaysians from all religious faiths in the country.

“Conversion to Islam should not be abused as a means to evade one’s legal obligations to one’s family. A person’s conversion to another religion should not cause pain and suffering for other members of the family,” said Vaithilingam. He asked state and federal government authorities to take necessary steps to fix loopholes in the law, so that Malaysians could freely practice religion in the country.

Conversion to Islam should not be abused as a means to evade one’s legal obligations to one’s family.

Ong is the current Minister of Housing and Local Government in the Malaysian cabinet, and also serves as the secretary-general of the {{w|Malaysian Chinese Association]] (MCA) and Perak MCA chairman. In his Wednesday statement, he said that individuals who convert to Islam through the marriage process should be permitted to renounce the religion if they leave the marriage. Ong also stated that the religion of a minor child with one Muslim parent should be determined by both parents, or remain the same until the child turns 18.

Ong said that issues involving divorce, custody of children and inheritance in matters of constitutional rights of non-Muslims had increased dramatically in the last three years. Ong emphasized the importance of civil law as related to non-Muslims in the country, as opposed to that of Syariah (Sharia), Islamic religious law.

We urge the Government to be transparent in this process.

“Non-Muslims are not to be subjected to any form of Syariah laws and for any disputes or overlapping areas involving the jurisdiction of civil and Syariah courts, civil laws must prevail. […] We urge the Government to be transparent in this process,” said Ong.

Ong’s comments were made as part of an 11-page motion of thanks on the royal address. His motion was seconded by Bintulu Minister of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. Ong also spoke about the corruption, education, crime and security and the economy in his two-hour speech.

Of the 27 million people in Malaysia, 60 percent are Muslim Malaysian Malays, 25 percent are Chinese and mainly Buddhists or Christians, and 7.8 percent are ethnic Indians and mainly Hindus.

Students in Rhode Island school attacked by wasps

Monday, September 21, 2009

Dozens of students and teachers were stung by yellow jacket wasps Monday at a middle school in Cranston. The attack occurred around 10:45 a.m., according to Ray Votto, the chief operating officer for Cranston Public Schools.

It is suspected that during a routine fire drill, students exiting the building disturbed the wasps’ nest in a field behind the school. Votto said, “When kids exited towards the back of the school building near our portable classrooms, they walked into a field and may have disrupted a nest”.

The Cranston Fire Department and school nurses responded to the scene to provide medical assistance. A total of 25 students, one of whom was hospitalized, and four teachers were stung, some multiple times. All of the students and one teacher were sent home.

Everything You Need To Know About Hemp Tea

  • Click Here To Find Out More About:
  • Medicinal Cannabis For Cancer

Considering the fact that tea has been around since 2700 BC, it belongs to one of the oldest beverages with over 1000 different varieties. It is the second most popular drink in the world, only outranked by water. No wonder then, that the global tea revenue was around USD 214.76 billion in 2019. Over 159 million US citizens drink tea every single day. So, it is not a surprise that even hemp tea is gaining quick popularity considering its medicinal benefits.

People have been using hemp tea as a beverage long before the legalization of cannabis products began. Cannabidiol or CBD has gained a lot of attention in recent years especially due to the recent studies that showed positive signs of therapeutic benefits associated with it.

There are two main types of cannabinoid receptors in our body. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol binds with the receptors that are mostly present in our brain. It causes the high that cannabis is associated with. However, CBD, unlike its counterpart, doesn’t produce that high as it is thought to work with a different set of receptors in our body that are mostly associated with feelings of relaxation and well-being. That’s why hemp, having more CBD and very few THC compounds within its chemical properties, is known to produce a calming effect, reduce anxiety, and relieve pain – the kind of health benefits CBD is commonly related to.

What are the ingredients found in Hemp tea?

The most important component of hemp is CBD extract. There are primarily two different types of extracted CBD – full spectrum extract and 99% pure CBD concentrate. Which one is better for consumption is still a matter of debate and something that needs solid evidence that is yet to be found. However, there are some talks about CBD becoming a better version when it comes to its medicinal properties because of all the other elements present in the whole plant including cannabinoids, terpenes (aroma and flavor agents), and phytochemicals. Below are the three things that consumers should consider while purchasing a pack of hemp tea:

  • Is it from industrial hemp sourcing?
  • Is the extracted CBD is a full-spectrum (one with the whole plant)?
  • Is the initial dosage level 5-15 mg?

The production and sale of hemp products were legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill. By federal law, hemp can’t have more than 0.3% THC or it would be considered marijuana. This ensures that Hemp tea would actually be safe for regular drinking purposes. However, it is always good to keep an eye on how you feel after having a cup of hemp tea. If you see any signs of drowsiness, you may want to try brewing a milder tea using fewer leaves or stop using the product altogether if the signs persist.

What are the benefits?

Hemp tea, also commonly named CBD tea, is a mixture of crushed leaves, cannabis flowers, and seeds along with other essential herbs. Below are a few health benefits of it:

Helps Reduce Anxiety Issues:

In a 2019 study, researchers analyzed a sample population of 72 adults with concerns related to anxiety and poor sleep. The primary objective was to determine if CBD could improve the sleep and/or anxiety issues that they had. The anxiety score decreased in 57 patients within the first month and stayed less throughout the study period. Even the sleep scores improved in 48 patients within the first month but fluctuated over time. Although controlled clinical trials might be needed, the researchers concluded that CBD might be an effective treatment alternative for anxiety-related disorders.

So, a cup or two of hemp tea per day is not a bad option when it comes to calming effects. In addition to CBD, hemp tea can also contain herbs such as hibiscus and chamomile which assist in the overall relaxation of our body.

Improves the Quality of Sleep:

According to this Harvard Health article, people suffering from anxiety, depression, or other post-traumatic stress disorders take longer to fall asleep. One sleep laboratory study found that youngsters having anxiety disorder slept less deeply as compared to a control group of healthy children. As CBD is known to have therapeutic effects and act as a treatment for anxiety and stress-related problems, hemp tea can, therefore, act as a possible remedy for poor sleep as well.

Improves Digestive System and Fights Chronic Pain:

Gastrointestinal problems are one of the common reasons for the use of cannabis. A few of these conditions include inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, are found in the gut-nerves also called the enteric nervous system (ENS). Any disorder in the gut is thought to involve ENS and hence the cannabinoid receptors are an attractive target for treatment. As THC and CBD can interact with these receptors, medical treatment with cannabis can be an effective alternative. Hence, a cup of CBD tea may help in keeping our guts happy!

When it comes to chronic pain, a study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine suggests that CBD can help in reducing pain and inflammation. It also reduces muscle spasms or stiffness that might lead to pain. Check out the testimonials of some patients who used medical cannabis as a treatment for chronic pain.

Although CBD is known to have several other health benefits, additional research is needed to give concrete evidence on these claims.

How to Make Hemp Tea

If you are already a regular tea drinker, making hemp tea would need just a couple of extra steps, and you are done. Here is a simple way of making CBD tea:

  1. Grind the CBD buds into a fine consistency and add to any tea infuser of your choice.
  2. Depending on how much CBD buds you’re using, I would say for safe results use 1 liter of water and bring it to boil.
  3. Add the infuser into the pan of water and let it simmer for up to 20 minutes.
  4. Remove the infuser using a filter and pour the content into a storage container.
  5. As cannabinoids are fat-soluble, it is better if you use an additional fatty source such as coconut oil or milk before drinking as it increases absorption rates and helps us harness everything it has to provide us with.
  6. Mix thoroughly before pouring into a cup, and you’re ready with a healthy hemp tea.

Conclusion

As the awareness of the health benefits of CBD grows, the use of hemp tea will continue to increase. The continued legalization of medical marijuana products in several states in the US will also assist in the marketing of hemp tea products. Currently, all operations happen within the states due to legal restrictions which increases the overall price of the products. But in the coming years, as things change, hemp tea will be more accessible and affordable to regular consumers.

Long shots dashed hopes of favorites in Derby race

Monday, May 9, 2005

Saturday’s running of the Kentucky Derby left favorites in dry churned up dust, as speedster Spanish Chestnut forced an early pace that only long-shot horses fully answered. The two top finishers, Giacomo and Closing Argument ran past race favorites Bellamy Road and hopeful Bandini, who came off the starting gate well and into the first turn. But they faded under a blistering early pace that at the half-mile pole was second fastest in race history.

Only Afleet Alex, showing at third, applied salve to the wounded crowd of 154,000 ticket-tearing fans. Betting for this year’s race totaled a record $103.3 million counting both on- and off-track wagering. A 2 dollar wager on the winning horse Giacomo paid $102.60.

TV viewership in top metropolitan markets was down only slightly from the previous year, which considering the wagering shows no lack of interest in the race:

Win: Giacomo $102.60
Place: Closing Argument: $45.80
Show: Afleet Alex: $19.80

Leverage In Forex Trading The Real Dangers Of Too Much Leverage!

  • Click Here To Find Out More About:
  • Forex Fundamental Analysis Trading Strategies

Submitted by: Mike D Weaver

You have been lied to about using leverage in Forex trading!

Why?

Because when people talk about leverage in Forex they focus in on its unique selling point, which is that it enables a trader to control large trading volumes with only a small investment.

Forex brokers are especially keen to tell you about how much leverage they will give you just to get you to open an account with them. A typical broker will often advertise the ability to leverage your account with them at a hundred to one.

This means that you can trade 100 times what you deposit. For every 1 dollar you deposit you can trade $100, so if you have $1000 you could place a trade worth $100,000.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUA4DR9wF_U[/youtube]

So, where is the dishonesty?

Well, the dishonesty is that brokers are not usually up-front about the risk involved when using leverage in Forex, and just how easily you can lose your $1000 when using this amount of leverage.

If you use leverage of a hundred to one in a trade worth $100,000, you only need to put forward $1000 and your broker will in effect ‘loan’ you the other $99,000 needed to cover your trade. In order to make such a large trade, you have to put forward a percentage of it as security, or as leverage.

In Forex trading we all know how volatile the market can be, and a trade will often move against you before turning round and going into profit. If your trade moved against you by just 1% it would wipe out the $1000 you put forward yourself.

Now your broker will not be prepared to lose money himself on your gamble, and will act to protect himself from losing on your trade. As soon as your 1% of the trade is wiped out he will close your trade for you. This is called a ‘Margin Call’, and is necessary for your broker to ensure they don’t actually put their own money at risk.

Now the trade you placed may have been a good one which turned around and moved into a profitable position. It’s too bad you won’t make money on it though, because your trade got cancelled when it made a small movement against you first.

You just lost $1000 in the space of a few seconds because you were too heavily leveraged!

So, what have we learnt?

The important lesson here is that when you apply the principles of leverage in Forex trading, do not allow your account to become too heavily leveraged. You may as well flush your money down the toilet as place it on a trade where you have no room to manoeuvre.

When leverage of a hundred to one is advertised it means that this is the maximum you can leverage your account – by 100 times what you deposit. You don’t actually have to use the full amount of leverage offered though, and the less leverage you use the more breathing space you will have if your trade starts to move against you.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.
