Read Santa Clara marks tenth anniversary

Saturday, September 10, 2005

Santa Clara, California, USA. The adult literacy program Read Santa Clara marked its tenth anniversary today with a gathering of program participants, staff, and supporters from the community. Read Santa Clara trains volunteer tutors and matches them with adult learners who wish to build their literacy skills.

In the presentation, program staff and supporters reviewed the program’s history and growth, honored long-time participants, and looked toward the future.

Santa Clara Mayor Patricia Mahan spoke at the gathering, noting, “Read Santa Clara joins people who need to learn with people who need to teach, and what a powerful combination that is.” She added, “I think adult literacy is so important.”

Program coordinators estimate that tutors volunteered some 5000 hours last year. City Manager Jennifer Sparacino estimates, “That’s worth about $100,000 per year in volunteer time.”

Learners also spoke about what Read Santa Clara meant to them. Raymond Moreno said, “I hope it stays for another ten, twenty, thirty years, because we need it.” Juan Velasquez said, “My life has changed a lot…I did many things I could not have done without help.” And Ike Moore said, “To be able to express myself…What a gift!”

byAlma Abell

When visiting Chevrolet dealers in San Antonio, it is important to take the time to make sure that you have an idea of the type of car that you want to buy. There are many people who make the mistake of buying a car based on it’s looks alone. While driving a car that has sleek lines is nice, it is not the best way to choose a car because it may leave you with poor gas mileage or limited leg room. It is best to first sit down and create a list of things that you want the car to have. Consider the interior space you would like, the gas mileage that would be ideal, how large of a trunk you need, and the type of fabric you want on the interior of the car. Once you have a list of every feature you would like, you can hand it to one of the Chevrolet dealers in San Antonio and they will be able to quickly and easily find a few different cars to show you that fit your needs.

This allows you to take the guesswork out of buying a car. You will not have to waste your time looking at cars that are not in your price range or that do not fit your needs. The dealer will be able to search for all vehicles that they have available in their database. It allows them to quickly gather the keys for each vehicle so that you can see them all in a very short period of time. Once you have narrowed the selection, you can then choose a few to test drive. All Chevy Dealerships In San Antonio will have more than one car that you may want to test drive, but it is important to make sure that you pay attention during each test drive and then take notes of the pros and cons that you noticed about each car. This will allow you to make an informed decision when you buy your car and ensure that you do not rush into the purchase and end up with a car that doesn’t fit your needs. Microsoft waits for death of Internet Explorer 6

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

With development of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) browser almost complete, Microsoft announced on Friday that it is time for IE6 users to move away from the antiquated 10-year-old browser. Microsoft has replaced it with three newer versions. On a new website, “The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown”, Microsoft has launched an aggressive campaign to persuade users to stop using IE6 and update to a newer IE. Its goal is to decrease IE6 users to less than one percent.

“[Ten] years ago, a browser was born. Its name was Internet Explorer 6. Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye,” Microsoft says on “The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown”.

Internet Explorer’s market share is slipping. IE’s various versions accounted for 70 percent of the market in 2009; this has dropped to approximately 56 percent today. Mozilla Firefox, its main rival, has been actively increasing its market share while the recently released Google Chrome is also quickly gaining users. PC World’s recent analysis of its own web traffic statistics concluded, “Usually, Internet Explorer is the #2 browser after Firefox, but over the past 30 days it’s been #3, a couple of points behind Safari-and nearly tied with Chrome. It might be a statistical blip. But if it isn’t, and Chrome continues to surge, IE could fall to fourth place.”

Web developers face big problems with IE6. As they design their web pages for the newer browsers with advanced web technology and geared to the newest web core markup language HTML 5, they are forced to accommodate older out-of-date technology to support IE6 users. Also, not mentioned on Microsoft’s “The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown” site, are the numerous security vulnerabilities putting the browser at risk of being hacked. The Internet security firm Secunia.com, has said that as of March 4, 2011, IE6 has 277 vulnerabilities; 39 percent of these are rated “highly critical”. Microsoft says that the latest versions of Internet Explorer provide the user with enhanced protection from these attacks and threats.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 is one of the most successful software products ever as measured by its durability and the massive numbers of people who have used it. IE6 shipped with Windows XP, nearly a decade ago. But it has outlived its usefulness, and Microsoft no longer wants to support it.

Arinze and Tettamanzi equal favorites as new Pope

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Irish betting shop chain, Paddy Power, is taking bets for a new Pope. The current front runners are Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria and Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi of Italy, who have each been given odds of 11-4.

“Our feeling is, we held off a few days, and now the cardinals themselves are convening in Rome,” Darren Haines, a spokesman for Paddy Power said.

“We do it very much in the same way as a horse race,” Haines added, “Without sounding so callous, in a sense, we have contenders, and you very much rate the speculation on the contenders, very much by going on media reports in the religious press … Our trading manager is very clued up on this, though she hasn’t had divine intervention.”

The full betting list can be found here.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

Acne Isn’t Attractive. Learn How To Get Rid Of It

by

Daren CariAcne is the most common skin problem affecting teens, and adults are not immune to it either. It is troublesome, difficult to cure, and something that nobody wants to deal with. So, just how do you get rid of? There are many ideas out there, but a few sure fire tricks have been scientifically tested and proven. This article will discuss some of them.

Stay away from facial scrubs that can cause or aggravate your acne. Most of these just scratch skin and contain ingredients that contain harks ingredients and chemicals. You need to be gentle with your cleaning because your skin is sensitive due to your breakouts. Stick with clean water and a gentle soap.

Try using salt water to clear up your acne. If regular facial soap and water aren’t quite getting the job done, try washing your face with salt water instead. It will work to remove oil without drying out your skin. Just be careful about getting it in your eyes or inside open abrasions.

One odd remedy for acne is toothpaste. Toothpaste acts as a drying agent when applied to pimples and causes them to shrink, much like how an over the counter topical ointment would. It should be noted that you should only apply a small amount to the affected area, and use a non gel based toothpaste. The simpler the toothpaste, the better, as toothpastes with whitening agents can cause the affected area to become worse and lead to scarring.

Although acne is the subject of many jokes about teenagers, it is a condition that negatively affects the self-esteem and psychological well-being of many young people. If you are a parent who would like to help your child deal with the emotional aspects of acne, there are resources available to help you with this process. Finding a reputable dermatologist who is trained to recognize the psychological effects of skin conditions is an important first step in relieving both the cause and the result of the acne. A counselor or psychologist can teach your teen how to cope with his or her feelings and alert you if the child is having any thoughts of suicide. Find out if there are any acne support groups in your area or search for an online forum for acne sufferers, that you and your son or daughter could join together. These precautionary measures could turn your despondent youth into a happy, carefree teenager again.

If you ever pop a pimple, make sure that you put Neosporin on it as soon as possible. Neosporin helps aid the healing process and can accelerate a scab so that you do not scar as easily. Once the scab is formed, never pick at it, as this can impede the healing process.

Chocolate can impact your acne in a large way, as it made up of dairy and contains a lot of sugar, two ingredients that cause acne in bunches. If you see that the chocolate that you are eating is having an impact on when your acne forms, reduce your intake immediately.

If you wear glasses or even sun glasses, it is very important that you keep them clean. Wearing dirty glasses will clog the pores around your nose, causing you to break out. Clean your glasses before you wear them each day, and you won’t have to worry about them causing you any breakouts.

In this article, we have reviewed a few scientifically proven tips for dealing with an acne break out. You may have to try several before finding what works for you, but a sure fire cure is not out of reach if you remain persistent. Follow these tips we have provided to find the ones that work for you.

Study says dogs can smell lung and breast cancer

Monday, August 7, 2006

Dogs can be trained to detect early and late stages of lung and breast cancer accurately according to a study published by California scientists in the little-known scientific journal Integrative Cancer Therapies.

The study took place over the last five years at the Pine Street Foundation, a non-profit organization which conducts evidence-based research on integrative medicine (combining complementary and alternative medicine and mainstream medicine). Michael McCulloch and colleagues used three Labrador Retrievers and two Portuguese Water Dogs, both common pets, that received basic behavioral dog training. The researchers trained the dogs to lie down next to a sample from a cancer patient and to ignore other samples.

The samples used were breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer and 31 with breast cancer — the two types of cancer with the highest mortality rates in the United States.

After the training phase, the dogs’ accuracy diagnosis was tested in a double-blind experiment. Among lung cancer patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 99% accurate and for breast cancer sensitivity was 88% and specificity 98%. Because these figures seem almost too good to be true, cancer experts are the same time baffled and skeptical. The authors of the study themselves also say replication of the study is needed.

Importantly, this was independent of the cancer stage, meaning the dogs were able to pick up the scent of cancer in its early stages. This is important because in many cases, the success of any treatment depends on early diagnosis. However, the researchers don’t believe this will lead to the use of dogs in the clinic soon, rather they want to find out which chemicals are actually sensed by the canines, because they could be used in laboratory assays. “It’s not like someone would start chemotherapy based on a dog test,” Dr. Gansler of the American Cancer Society said, “They’d still get a biopsy.”.

The researchers were inspired by anecdotal reports about dogs detecting cancer. In 1989, a British women consulted with her family physician because her Dalmatian kept licking a mole on her leg. At biopsy it showed to be malignant melanoma. When diagnosed too late this form of cancer has a poor survival rate, but in this case early surgery was made possible, and the women survived. Prior studies showed that breath samples from patients with lung cancer or breast cancer contain distinct biochemical markers. This provides a basis for the hypothesis that some cancer types produce volatile chemicals that dogs could smell. A study published in the British Medical Journal already proved that dogs could use their exquisite sense of smell to detect bladder cancer in urine samples, but they were only correct in 41% of cases, and another study provided preliminary evidence that dogs could detect melanomas.

This doesn’t mean you can show your breasts to your dog and it will tell you if you have cancer, other physicians caution, and scientists do not advise people to train their dogs to sniff for cancer. Unresolved issues from the study include the fact that subjects were required to breathe deeper than normal, so it’s not sure whether dogs can smell cancer in normal breath. Also, whether this is a permanent skill that would be retained by dogs was not tested.

Finally, there are concerns that could arise over liability issues: who would be responsible when the dog makes a mistake?

Current detection methods for both lung and breast cancer are not flawless. For lung cancer, chest X-ray and sputum cytology (detecting cancer cells in coughed up fluid) fail to detect many early cases, and CT scan produces many false-positive results unless combined with expensive PET scans. Although it might be comparing apples and oranges, a $2.5 million CT scanner has an accuracy of 85 to 90%. Mammography also produces false-positive results, and it may be difficult in women with dense breast tissue. As such, another type of “pet”-scan, using dogs as a biological assay, might prove feasible for screening if supported by further research. Current tests are also expensive so the use of dogs for preliminary cancer testing could prove to be an affordable alternative for countries in the developing world.

Food Allergies Know how to fight them

by

Brian Miller

Food allergies are caused by an abnormal response of immune system to certain food. The symptoms vary from mild to severe, depending on the immune system of a person. Those symptoms are nausea, suffocation, itching, diarrhea, tongue swelling and low blood pressure. The allergy stays for several hours after the food intake. Some foods that are known to cause allergies are peanuts, Cows milk, shellfish, eggs, wheat, rice, tree nuts and fruits. Food allergies are caused if protein, which is present in the food, combines with antibodies (IgE) in immune system and triggers the release of inflammatory chemical histamine. Diagnosis for food allergies are done based on medical history, skin prick tests, patch testing, blood test and oral food challenge.

Here, skin prick test and blood test are done to detect allergies caused by IgE antibodies. Skin prick test is performed by placing tiny board of allergens with protruding needles on the body. When the skin reacts, the person is considered to be allergic. To diagnose allergies caused by other substances, patch testing and oral food challenge are used. Patch testing is done to identify the substance that causes the allergic reaction. This method is used when there is a delayed allergic response. Oral food challenge is done by orally swallowing allergen as a pill. This method is risky and should be performed in a hospital, as the person is prone to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction to food that may even lead to death. The diagnostic tools, named as endoscopy and colonoscopy, are also used to diagnose allergies.

Visiting an insect stings doctor Charlottesville is quite important because some of the insect bites or stings could be life-threatening to a person. An insect sting punctures the persons skin and the allergic reaction is caused by saliva, venom or other excretory materials injected into the skin by the insect. The severity of allergy depends on the insects species, location of the sting and sensitivity of a person. Many insects inject formic acid into the skin that results in pain and swelling around the infected area. Stings from insects like bees, wasps, fire ants and hornets are very painful and generate a very dangerous allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, which may put a persons life at risk, so immediate consultation from an insect stings doctor Charlottesville is required. Many species of bees and wasps have two poisonous glands. One release formic acid that is less dangerous and results only in swelling, itching and pain in the area the insect has stung. The other gland releases a neurotoxin, resulting in a dangerous allergic reaction- anaphylaxis, which may even lead to death. Skin allergies caused by insect sting can last for few days but in some cases, it is reported that it lasted for two years. When an insect injects venom into the human body, the venom becomes very harmful because it causes anticoagulation; thus preventing blood clotting. In order to save the life of a person, immediate assistance from a particular insect stings doctor is required. In most of the cases, the assistance of the emergency aid in hospitals is also quite beneficial to save the persons life.

Know how to deal with

food allergies

. Make sure you have a proper knowledge of different foods and allergies. Insect stings could be quite painful and sometimes fatal. So get the attention of an

Brechin thrown out of Scottish Cup after dispute

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Brechin City, a Scottish football team, was today ejected from the Scottish Cup following two separate disputes over two cup-tied players.

Hamilton Academical filed a complaint about the incident to the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and they decided to stage a replay of the match. However upon hearing of the second player, the SFA decided to remove Brechin from the competition and fine them £10,000. Hamilton will go through to play Aberdeen in the now delayed Sixth Round at Pittodrie.

Brechin secretary Angus Fairlie said: “It’s certainly a big blow. It was an oversight but a very expensive mistake. We thought we would have a big pay day against Aberdeen but still have to pay win bonuses.”

The replay match was won by Brechin 2-1 in extra time, after a 0-0 draw in the first encounter.
