FACTS:

The wife filed a divorce action and sought child custody and support, alimony, possession of the family home, subsistence, and attorney’s fees pendente lite. The district court ordered the wife and child to submit to blood-grouping tests and required the wife to answer the interrogatories propounded by the husband. The wife sought review. The court of appeals reversed the order for the blood-grouping tests. The husband sought review.

ISSUES:

The issues here are (1) whether the wife is required to answer interrogatories relating to the allegation of adultery and (2) whether and child are required to submit to a blood- grouping test.

DISCUSSION:

N.C. Gen. Stat. 8-50.1 provides:

Competency

of evidence of blood tests. In the trial of any criminal action or proceedings in any court in which the question of paternity arises, regardless of any presumptions with respect to paternity, the court before whom the matter may be brought, upon motion of the defendant, shall direct and order that the defendant, the mother and the child shall submit to a blood grouping test; provided, that the court, in its discretion, may require the person requesting the blood grouping test to pay the cost thereof. The results of such blood grouping tests shall be admitted in evidence when offered by a duly licensed practicing physician or other qualified person. Such evidence shall be competent to rebut any presumptions of paternity. In the trial of any civil action, the court before whom the matter may be brought, upon motion of either party, shall direct and order that the defendant, the plaintiff, the mother and the child shall submit to a blood grouping test; provided, that the court, in its discretion, may require the person requesting the blood grouping test to pay the cost thereof. The results of such blood grouping tests shall be admitted in evidence when offered by a duly licensed practicing physician or other duly qualified person. When, as in the present case, issues of paternity and of adultery are raised, it would be unrealistic to hold that the evidence of the results of the blood-grouping tests is competent on the issue of paternity but not on the issue of adultery. Moreover, it would be virtually impossible for the District Court Judge, when passing upon the application for alimony and child support pendente lite, to consider the results of the blood-grouping tests as related to child support pendente lite but not as to alimony pendente lite. For the reasons stated, the decision of the Court of Appeals, which reversed Judge Webb’s order for the blood-grouping tests, is reversed.

The General Assembly, in enacting the Rules of Civil Procedure, did not contemplate that Rules 33 and 26(b) would enable the husband and the wife in actions between them to require the other to answer interrogatories relating to acts of adultery or conduct from which adultery might be implied during the subsistence of their marriage. We are quite sure the General Assembly did not intend in such manner to remove the cloak of privacy surrounding the confidential relationships of husband and wife. For the reasons stated above, the order requiring plaintiff “to answer each and every interrogatory,” to the extent it requires plaintiff to answer Interrogatories Nos. 20 through 33 and Nos. 36 through 51, should be reversed.

JUDGMENT:

The court reversed the court of appeals’ decision that reversed the district court’s order that the wife and child submit to blood-grouping tests in the wife’s

divorce action

. The court also reversed the district court’s order for answers to the husband’s interrogatories. The case was remanded with directions to reverse the order that required answers to the interrogatories and to affirm the order that required the blood-grouping tests.

Research

According to a recent study from Iran, those who underwent nasal surgery sounded more nasal for the first five months post-operatively.

The said study was done in Mashhad Universtiy of Medical Sciences in Iran. It was composed of 22 females and five males with ages ranging from 18-45 years old. Dr. Kamran Khazaeni, a surgeon who specializes on ear, nose and throat procedures and who was also part of the study, shared their results to Reuters. He said that the outcome from 27 surgeries showed that the voices change in significant way statistically, but the actual changes were subtle.

A team of linguists and speech pathologists also detected more pronounced nasal sound in the test. Based on their observation, the study participants had a hard time pronouncing the nasal consonants, since Iran does not have any nasal vowels in their language. There was an increase in the hyponasality after rhinoplasty. This is similar to a sound of the voice when there is not enough air passing through the nasal cavity. An example would be a person with a stuffy nose. The team used patient self-assessments and a compter program that analyzes acoustic sound, which confirmed these results.

According to the researchers, the changes in the surface area of the nasal cavity may increase airflow resistance, which results to an increase in sound absorption resulting in decreased passage of the sound amplitude.

Khazaeni wrote in the February 2014 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery that if a nose job or rhinoplasty has the tendency to change vocal sounds by narrowing the nasal cavity of the person, those who rely on their voice for a living should be aware of this risk. Based on the data gathered, they were able to notice that rhinoplasty can change your voice.

However, there are some surgeons who say that this does not change any voice outcome. But for those who think that rhinoplasty can potentially alter the voice, they explain that it could be due to swelling, mucus or congestion, which are expected during the healing period.

Other Cases

To spot any voice changes after a rhinoplasty, looking at Hollywood stars who have had them done can be the best evidence. However, the problem here is that a large percentage of these celebrties would like to keep their surgical procedure on the down low.

For events and meetings that draw different cultures together, like the 2008 Olympics in Beijing or an international company meeting involving members speaking different languages, Simultaneous Interpretation (SI) is the key to understanding the ideas and information that is being shared.

But how does it work? What are the components involved in creating a system that will allow many different languages to be voiced and understood?

It all starts with the Interpreter. Hiring the actual human interpreter is the most important aspect because all of the fancy equipment is worthless if the human interpreter cant keep up with the conversation in the meeting. That being said, an interpreters job is made much easier through the use of the right equipment.

For whatever the event, the Simultaneous Interpretation system will need microphones for the participants to speak into (more than likely these will already be in the overall audio system for the conference), that audio will be known as the Floor Channel. Interpreters listen to that Floor Channel through a piece of equipment known as an Interpreter Unit (or Interpreter Desk) which is a device with multiple language inputs and multiple language outputs. Audio from the Floor Channel comes to the Interpreter Unit and the Interpreter listens via headphones or a built-in speaker. The Interpreter can then interpret the Floor Channel into a different language by using a headset or detachable microphone which will then send the language channel out to a language distribution system.

Distributing the language channels can be done in different methods. If the event is using a Conference System then the Interpreter Unit can send the language channel right back to the participants station on the same cable it received the Floor Channel. The participant (or Delegate) will simply use a pair of headphones connected to their station and choose the appropriate language channel to listen to.

If there are non-participating members in the event, that need to hear the interpreted languages, a wireless distribution system can be implemented. This system will have a device with multiple inputs to handle the various languages and then distribute them throughout the meeting room via Infrared or RF (Radio Frequencies). The audience members will have a small receiver with a headphone jack and a channel selector, and they too will be able to listen to the Simultaneous Interpretation system.

The important thing to consider when putting together a Simultaneous Interpretation system, or any system, is that the fewer components there are the less likely anything will go wrong (or at least when something does go wrong there are less components to check). This is one of the biggest advantages of using a conference system that includes Simultaneous Interpretation. The components are from the same manufacturer, the cabling is the same, the connectors are the same, and because it is a conference system, all of the features you will need for the rest of the event are already included in the components needed for the SI system.
