UK house prices have fallen 10.5% this year, says Nationwide Building Society

Thursday, August 28, 2008

After dropping 1.9% in July, house prices in the United Kingdom are now falling at the fastest rate since 1990, according to Nationwide Building Society.

The average price of a home has dropped by £20,000 down to £164,654, losing 10.5% of its value in 2008. Property values fell by 1.9% in the past month, and 1.5% in July. In another study, it was revealed that house prices have been steadily falling since October last year.

Nationwide’s chief economist, Fionnuala Earley said that activities in the housing market had recently been “very subdued”, although there are signs of increased interests in home sales, possibly due to the appeal of lower house prices.

The Bank of England stated there has been an increase in the number of people taking out a fixed rate mortgage as opposed to a variable rate loan. Further research by Nationwide has concluded that mortgage approvals also fell by 65% last month.

Improve The Appearance Of Your Home Using Cement Siding In Omaha Ne

There are many things that you can do to improve the exterior of your home, but replacing the siding may provide the best bang for the buck. This is because the siding of a home is one of its most visible components. You have several options for siding including wood slat, vinyl and fiber-cement. Out of all of these, Cement Siding in Omaha NE may be the best choice because of its durability. Unlike wood, fiber-cement siding doesn’t rot and unlike vinyl it doesn’t buckle or crack.

Cement siding is made from Portland cement, sand and a binding fiber, usually a cellulose-based material like wood. The fiber gives the product strength and allows it to be used like lumber. Of course, fiber-cement still requires special care when installing such as drilling nail holes at the end of the planks to avoid breakage and certain manufacturers may specify specific nail sizes and types. Thankfully, your contractor will know all the details and you needn’t worry about these things.

One of the best things about Cement Siding in Omaha NE is the fact that it looks like wood siding. The product can be textured so it has both the look and feel of wood planking and only requires a coat of paint for a proper finish. Unlike wood, fiber-cement is generally painted at the factory or by contractors trained to work with the material. However, repainting the surface is just as easy as regular siding, only it isn’t required quite as often.

Perhaps the most important features of fiber-cement are its durability, resistance to rot and immunity to insects. Fiber-cement provides no food source to damaging insects like termites and it doesn’t soak up moisture like real wood siding. This means it won’t rot or break down like wood siding will. Because it installs like regular wood siding, fiber-cement doesn’t move like vinyl siding does. Properly installed vinyl siding requires space for expansion and contraction and must hang on the building. Plus, fiber-cement can be used for trim which gives your home a uniform look which can last for decades. The estimated service life of fiber-cement siding is at least thirty-five to fifty years. Pope John Paul II dies

Saturday, April 2, 2005

John Paul II (Karol Józef Wojty?a) 1920-2005

After months of failing health, His Holiness Pope John Paul II passed away today, April 2, at 9:37 p.m. local time (19:37 UTC). He was 84 years old. An email message to journalists from the spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls from The Vatican confirmed the death at 20:00 UTC.

The Pope had a tracheostomy earlier this year to help him breathe, and then lost his ability to speak last week. On Thursday March 31 he developed a urinary tract infection that led to septic shock and cardiovascular collapse. A nasogastric feeding tube was inserted to help him regain strength. The Pope elected not to return to Rome’s Gemelli hospital, but instead to stay in his own apartments where he was tended to by his personal doctors and Vatican medical staff.

The same night, he was administered the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick also known as the last rites. On Friday April 1, the Vatican said he was having difficulties with both his heart and his kidneys.

Italian news agency Agenzia Giornalistica Italia reports the pope’s final message was “I am happy, you be happy, too. Let’s pray together with joy. I entrust everything to the Virgin Mary with joy”.

A description of the last moment of the holy father from father Jarek Cielecki, director of the Vatican service news and of the Italian TV catolic Tele Padre Pio, tells us the last moment of life of this great man. “The Holy father died looking at the window, gathered in prayer. As such he was conscious. Just before dying, the Pope raised his right hand in a sign of blessing, as if he was aware of all the people gathered in prayer. Then, as soon as the prayer ended, the Pope did a huge effort, said the word ‘Amen’ and died.”

The Vatican has announced that the funeral will take place on Wednesday, April 6 and that the Pope’s body will lie in state from Monday, April 4.

Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Jones dies at age 90

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Jennifer Jones, leading lady in two dozen Hollywood pictures and an Academy Award winner for her first major film, 1943’s The Song of Bernadette, died Thursday at her home in Malibu, California. She was 90.

Born Phyllis Lee Isley in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 2, 1919, her pursuit of fame as an actress took her to New York City at the age of 19, leaving for Hollywood one year later. She changed her name to Jennifer Jones while testing for a part in a David O. Selznick movie; in 1949, Selznick, who produced Gone with the Wind, would become her second and perhaps highest-profile husband.

Jones broke into dramatic film roles in 1943 as the lead in The Song of Bernadette, a movie about a nun who saw visions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes, France in 1858. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for the role, and became a star well in-demand, earning Academy Award nominations the next three years in a row for the films Since You Went Away, Love Letters and Duel in the Sun.

Jones was a popular movie actress well into the 1950s. She starred as a Eurasian doctor, Han Suyin, in the 1955 film Love is a Many-Splendored Thing, earning her a fifth and final Academy Award nomination. After a well-received turn in a film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway‘s A Farewell to Arms in 1957, she started to take on fewer and fewer movie roles. She would make her final on-camera appearance in the 1974 disaster movie The Towering Inferno.

Jones was married three times and was survived by one of her three children, Robert Walker, Jr., from her first marriage to Robert Walker. She married for a third and final time in 1971 to industrialist Norton Simon, six years after the death of her second husband David O. Selznick. The couple’s collection of South Asian art, acquired while living in India, is now showcased in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. Jones was an active force behind the operations of the museum, serving as chairman from Simon’s death in 1993 to 2003, and as trustee emeritus until her own death.

There are more than 300,000 public swimming pools in the United States, visited by more than 300 million people over the age of six every year. That is a lot of swimming. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), nearly one in eight pool inspections identified serious violations resulting in pool closures and more than one-tenth of pool inspections identified disinfectant violations. With numbers like these it’s easy to see the benefits of hiring a Commercial Pool Service Sacramento CA.

The spread of Recreational Water Illness (RWI) is a priyears, there has been a significant outbreak of RWIs associated with swimming. Cryptosporidium, or crypto for short, can live for days even in treated pools because of its tolerance to chlorine. To avoid these issues, commercial pool operators need to be aware of the following:

  • Filtration -; Swimming pool filters are necessary pieces of equipment needed to keep swimming pools clean. Critical to ensuring the water’s cleanliness are proper filtration and circulation. A swimming pool’s circulation system is made up of a pump, pump strainer, skimmer, drains, and filter. Together they work to ensure the chemicals are working effectively and that the water is filtered appropriately.
  • Probe Fouling -; A thin coating can develop on the ORP probes surface from the build up of contaminants such as body lotions and oils, sweat, and mucous discharge from a swimmer’s nostrils. The buildup of contaminants reduces the effectiveness of the probes ability to detect chlorine levels in the water. Automatic cleaning systems help keep the ORP probes clear of coatings and contaminants. These are especially suited for the heavy use commercial swimming pools receive. Click here for more details.
  • Sanitation -; Maintaining proper levels of sanitation is critical to commercial swimming pools due to their number of swimmers. Typical of commercial swimming pools are highs and lows of sanitizer levels due to the variance of swimmer loads. Sanitizer levels that are either too high or too low may result in pool closure by the local health department, resulting in a loss of revenue and potentially causing damage to the pool’s equipment.

There is a lot at stake regarding the care of commercial swimming pools. Many commercial pool managers consider hiring a Commercial Pool Service Sacramento CA, well worth the investment. One such company is Geremia Pools, with over five decades of expert service, they offer customized services for any size facility.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.
